When most people think of cows, they think of the smelly area around Highway 5 known as Kettlemen City. Or they picture happy cows frolicking in Petaluma…thanks to the California State Cheese Board.

Those preconceived notions change after people visit Hartsong. Meet Woodrow:

Woodrow came to Hartsong at 3 weeks old. A Rancher in Jackson (with two-hundred heads of cattle) found him wandering in a circle, and starving. Woodrow was abandoned by his mother because he was blind.

Just under sixty pounds, and emaciated the Rancher became attached, and rather than send Woodrow to slaughter, he called Hartsong.

Everyone at Hartsong immediately fell in love with the adorable Angus calf. Woodrow’s heart shines through his black eyes.

Twice a day Woodrow gets two quarts of a warm buttermilk/milk replacer concoction which he suckles from a ginormous bottle.

A few hours spent with Woodrow will have you chuckling as he bumbles his way around the twelve other cattle that live on the Ranch. He’s clumsy with his feet, and occasionally bonks his head on a bench or fence, but he’s quickly learning his way around.

Even a Rancher (who breeds cattle to eat) couldn’t deny the love that’s deep within the heart of this baby cow. It reaches out to you, grabs you and draws you in. And with love in return Woodrow is growing up to be an amazing testimony to the power of the protection and safety which Hartsong offers animals in need.

Check out the video of Woodrow in "Mega Play" mode:

* Kathy and Jim Hart run an animal sanctuary in Greenwood, California. They hope to continue to raise enough money from donations to allow them to continue rehabilitating animals in need and to continue spreading awareness for the humane treatment of “animals we eat.”
